NBC Youth Forum Open Meeting

NBC would like to invite young people and children you know to the open meeting of Youth Forum on 5 December after school. It should be an opportunity not only to find out more about the Forum, but also to get insights to the ways young people can be involved in local decision-making and to get some first-hand experience. If you know young people or children who might be interested in stand for election to the Forum or similar bodies in the future please encourage them to attend:

Wednesday 5th December 2007 5pm - 8pm at Northampton Guildhall, St Giles Square.

Includes:

- speed-dating type activity with local councillors (teachers and youth workers also very welcome to take part) for young people (sometimes also known as speed-networking this involves rounds in which young people have 4 mins to ask councillors etc questions (certain questions are off limits e.g. age) to help find out about each other as people so gives an opportunity to meet people who make decisions affecting young people and children - there will be prizes for the best questions asked. We're organising it again as it was very popular when we ran it earlier this month for Local Democracy Week.

- showing of the film 'X Marks the Spot' made by local young people from Spring Boroughs who found that there was a plague pit in their local area

- consultation about which young people and children should be involved in the Shadow Board that makes decisions about services for young people across Northamptonshire

We should also have some seasonal goodies e.g. cake, sweets, fruit etc included too!

Group Update from Tony

Well The Attic Youth Group has now been running again since Tuesday 5th September 2006 after a summer break. Kat, Chris and myself are really enjoying getting to know all the members. We have had an eclectic, (I like that word) mix of activities; t-shirt painting - very good they were too, healthy smoothie making balanced out by Kat making mint sweets! An impromptu evening of ‘Win Loose or Draw’ where the group were very talented with their artist skills, this was also evident when Kat brought her arts and craft kit in and we made jewellery one evening. The Attic is also a place where members can talk and access information about issues that concern and affect them in their lives, lead by qualified youth workers.

The Attic has a lot more coming up soon. We are looking into having one of the members teaching us about photography, a quiz night, a self esteem workshop and lots more as we and the group think of them!

If you’re aged 16-25 and fancy joining us please get in touch through NLGBA.

Well take care and catch up soon.

Tony

Andrew Simpson visits The Attic

Andrew Simpson, Lib Dem Councillor in Northampton, came to visit The Attic on March 28th. Andrew came to talk to the group about his experiences as a Councillor and what it was like to stand as an MP in the last General Election. The group had a lot of questions for Andrew and we discussed topics such as Votes at 16, LGBT equality and Civil Partnerships, Homophobic Bullying in schools and ASBO’s. It was a very interesting evening and we all went away with a better understanding of how politics touches every aspect of our lives. Thanks Andrew for a great evening and giving up your time to be with us.

My trip to Birmingham

On Saturday 1st April, The Attic Youth Group went to Birmingham for the day. We went to the National Sea Life Centre, which we all really enjoyed. As well as seeing a lot of sea creatures, we could also hold some of them and see them being fed, which was really interesting. The best things for me were the giant sea turtles (one of them was over 40 stone in weight!) and the sharks, which we saw swimming above us in the underwater tunnel.

In the afternoon, we all had time to explore the city centre and also do some shopping. Some of us went further than others! We had great fun. We then went back to get the train to Northampton. On the journey home, we had a competition to see who had bought the tackiest gift. I won’t tell you who won! Some of us fell asleep on the journey home (like me!). I’m looking forward to the next youth group trip and I’d like to say thanks to Emma and Becky for organising the trip to Birmingham for us – we all had a great day out!

Love always, Steve Boswell.

Let Loose In London

Members of the NLGBA youth group, now known as The Attic, recently went on a trip to London. Group member George Ray reports on what they got up to:

The NLGBA recently organised a subsidised weekend to London for members of the youth group. We had a really good time. What we did was meet at Northampton Train Station on Saturday so Becky, Emma and Helen could run through a few things before catching the train to Euston. When we arrived we had free time in central London before we all met up again at 4pm to go for a quick drink and then to the London Eye. The London Eye was great it took about 45 minutes to get all the way round and when you looked out of the pod you could see London, I never knew London was so big! After the London eye we then went to Pizza Express, the food in there was absolutely great. After that we then went to a Youth Hostel, we stayed over night there, it was really cool. We got up about 8am Sunday had breakfast then caught the tube up to Camden. We then had free time in Camden and for all you people who love to shop, Camden is right up your street. We met up with Becky again to get some money for lunch then had more free time. At 2.30pm we started heading back to Euston where we were catching the train back to Northampton, we were lucky we got an early train arriving in Northampton at 4.02pm. It was an excellent weekend.

Summer Solstice Sizzler

On June 21st twelve members of the youth group took a trip over to Milton Keynes to celebrate summer solstice with the Q:Space LGB youth group at the stone circle at Willen Lake. It was a beautiful summer’s evening, thankfully, as a barbeque was planned and it would have been a very hungry group had we not been able to cook outside!

We had a great time eating semi-burned barbeque fayre, listening to and some even having a go on African drums, playing a game of rounders and flying the rainbow flag. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we are planning to return the favour to Q:Space youth group later in the summer in sunny Northampton!

A lot more is planned for the summer and beyond with the youth group so please contact me if you are interested in getting involved in any capacity. I look forward to hearing from more of you!

Youth Group Holds First Meeting

The youth group had its first meeting on 3rd May and a fantastic bunch of young people turned up. There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement and we have now planned a programme of events and meetings for the summer. The group will be launched on a weekly basis in the new year but in the meantime, we are involving young people in the process of setting it up, aswell as them taking part in some fun activities together along the way!

On 21st June, we are taking a trip to a LGBT youth group in Milton Keynes and having a barbeque to celebrate summer solstice. Also, were planning a weekend away to London on July 23rd and 24th. There are other meetings and activities in the pipeline too.

We would love more people to come along so if you are interested yourself or know anyone else who may be, then please contact me. Also, we are looking for volunteers to support the youth group in a variety of different roles. If you’re interested, please let me know!

I look forward to hearing from you! Becky
